Since Beau Bo passed I've been doing things Ive always wanted to do but couldn't take him so I held off. I'll post later about the Charleston Museum, Caw Caw Exhibit and Patriots Park, before he crossed we did Drayton Hall and Hampton Park which I'll also post about another time.
Admittance is 30$ for both ships including the Medal of Honor Museum (I didn't visit that). Parking may surprise you, a local told me 'five dollars ' but that's only for the first hour, I stayed 3+ hours and it cost $17.50.
The Laffey was incredible and an immersive experience, I spent an hour there. The USS Yorktown was immense but I wanted to see as much as I could so I sped walked/climbed. While there I really admired my Dzadza (grandpa) more for serving on a submarine in WWII. The ships were cramped in places despite their large sizes, I can only imagine how more cramped a sub would have been!
Takeaways: the Laffey galley was as small as my Babacia's narrow kitchen but fed 350 men every day!
The smell of cigarette smoke still lingered almost a century later in the Officers Mess.
Incredibly, the laundry was PRESSED on both ships, R E S P E C T.
Massive respect for the Boiler technician, if you're an engineer, that room was off the hook!
Also, I hadn't learned much Black History in school I have been so impressed by local places having much more information about this.
Definitely worth a visit with eyes open on expense, eat lunch beforehand, they only sell snacks, pop, water. You can bring and refill your own water bottle. Be prepared for lots and lots of climbing.
Incredible!
